Roses are Red Ribbon Week Poetry
Sometimes the best thing to do for Ribbon Week Red is to have students make their own poetry. Using the old Roses are red, violets are blue poem is easy for students to create their own rhymes. Then are some examples.
Roses are red, violets are blue, I never take drugs, and you?
Roses are red, Night is black, I will not to take drugs, because I'm smarter than that.
Roses are red, forest trees are green, taking lots of drugs can do something real media.
Roses are red sheets are white, someone offers me drugs, I would say that's not fair.
Roses are red some bears are brown, taking drugs would any time my parents really frown.
Using all colors, gray, yellow, gold, silver, khaki, pink, clear, lime, striped, too pink, camouflage, rust, peach, fresh cream, aqua, red, brown, purple, violet, red, blue and white checkered, black, red, blue, sky blue, bright. So some students will go directly to the dictionary and find others.
Others, like aqua, blue, beige, chocolate, coral, red, salmon, turquoise, brick fuchsia, honey dew, indigo, ivory, lavender, lemon chiffon, cyan, linen, magenta, brown, rose, moccasin, Peru, sienna teal, thistle, and many others.
If they really would like to see the color you can go online and type in the search box html color names and that will take you to a site that will show the child the actual color.
After trying to do something as simple as the poem Roses are red have to deal some other forms of poetry. The most students are familiar with or are taught in elementary school is haiku, tongue twisters and limericks.
Ask students from other styles of poetry like haiku. Haiku Poetry is an unrhymed Japanese verse. Seventeen syllables in all, three unrhymed lines of five, seven and five syllables. Usually written in present tense. It is rumored that the 5/7/5 rule was made for school children to understand and learn this kind of poetry. Although this is often used in describing seasons it works well with the description of the results of taking drugs. Or does well to describe things to do besides drugs.
A twister would be fun, too. Students love to do tongue twisters because they may be silly and not have to do a lot of sense. Alliteration can be taught at this time because that is what is twister. Tongue Twister are formed by lines that are difficult to say quickly. The poem should tie your tongue in knots.
Another type of poetry that could address the issue of drugs is a limerick. A limerick is a rhymed humorous poem of five lines. The rhyme scheme is AABB.
All these types of poetry can be successfully used for students to express their feelings about drugs. Or they could use to express their fears about drugs, their desire to stay away from drugs. Poetry is just a way for them to express their innermost feelings without fear. Red Ribbon Week is an ideal time to teach poetry and have expressed these feelings.
